Improving Passenger Experience at London Stansted Airport with Selecta's Grab-and-Go Solutions

The Challenge

London Stansted Airport, the third busiest airport in London, served 28 million passengers in 2023. Ensuring passengers had access to high-quality food and beverages outside the main terminal was challenging, as the gates are located across three satellite hubs, making it impossible to return to the terminal building once in the gate area.

Objective

The team at London Stansted Airport aimed to enhance the passenger refreshment experience in these hubs and generate additional revenue without investing in a manned café area.

The Solution

Selecta proposed fitting out a disused unit in Satellite 2 with several self-serve vending machines to enhance passenger convenience at London Stansted Airport.  The  grab-and-go solutions ensure passengers can quickly access food and beverages.

This grab-and-go retail area includes:

  • State-of-the-Art Bean-to-Cup Coffee Machines: Featuring built-in water filters, these machines offer passengers premium hot beverages and refreshing filtered cold water.
  • Heated Snack Vending Machine: Provides passengers with hot snacks.
  • Smart Fridges: Offer a variety of cold drinks and snacks.

This setup ensures passengers have everything they need for a quick grab-and-go before boarding their flight.

The Results

Since its opening in February, the unit has achieved impressive results*:

  • 36,251 Smart Fridge Sales
  • 7,470 Hot Drinks Dispensed
  • 1,332 Rustler Hot Snacks Sold

By responding to consumer behaviour, adjusting the product offerings, and adding pricing labels, sales per passenger have increased by 242% since the unit opened.
